Rhamnus frangula Buckthorn has
been used in England and the United States to treat cancers, and other
Rhamnus species have been used similarly in folk medicine from at least
the time of Galen (circa 150 a.d.). It is antifungal, cathartic,
depurative, diuretic, laxative, and purgative. It's many uses cover arthritis, constipation, gallstones, gout, hemorrhoids, herpes, jaundice, lead poisoning, liver stagnation, obesity, parasites, & pulmonary edema. Rhamnus frangula supplementation is widely promoted for chronic constipation, to ease bowel evacuation, and to soften stool. It resembles senna and rhubarb in action. It is also currently being studied as an antifungal agent and has shown activity against Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Trichophytum. The wood of this plant is hard and durable. It has been used to make shoes, nails and veneer. Its charcoal is favoured by gunpowder makers.
